SCIENTIFIC RATIONALE
Dear colleagues,
It is with great honor and deep emotion that we open the 16th edition of our International Biennial Meeting “Daniel Dargent”, exactly 34 years since the inaugural and historic edition of 1992.
Sixteen editions signify continuity—but they also represent an enduring capacity for renewal, for interpreting change, and for keeping pace with the challenges of our time.
Following the enthusiastic success of the previous edition, we are once again pleased to present the innovative educational format of the Cultural Battles.
This edition, aptly titled “The Rematch,” will once more see two “Gladiators” engage in intellectual combat in the Maratea arena, defending opposing theses (thesis vs antithesis) through structured argumentation. Guiding us through this confrontation will be our irreplaceable Troublemaker, whose provocations and reflections will steer us toward our one true aim: synthesis.
The objective is to shed light—through close, dynamic exchanges—on certain controversial and, at times, conflicting aspects of our discipline. We aim to ensure that “the opponents hurl intellectual spears at one another, attacking or defending their respective approaches to compelling clinical challenges.”
It is essential that the two “Gladiators” engage in a debate grounded in literature that, while potentially methodologically flawed, presents opposing perspectives or questions each other’s theses.
The most demanding role falls to the instigator (Troublemaker), who must expose the weaknesses in the arguments of both speakers, demonstrating a deep understanding of the topic under discussion.
Frequently, these battles end without a clear victor, precisely because they touch upon widely accepted clinical paradigms—paradigms that, though long unchallenged, are in need of renewed critical evaluation.
I therefore hope that the 16th Daniel Dargent Biennial Meeting will once again serve as a stage for dialogue and reflection, and, hopefully, help chart a path forward for all of us.
